Choosing the Right Massage: Swedish, Deep Tissue, Hot Stone, or Cranial Sacral

We get some version of this question almost every week: "Which massage should I book?" It's a fair question. Four different names on a service menu don't tell you much about what your body will actually feel afterward, so here's the plain-language version.

Swedish Massage — For Relaxation First

Swedish massage uses long, smooth strokes and lighter pressure to calm the nervous system and ease everyday tension. If your main goal is to relax, sleep better, or simply enjoy an hour where nobody needs anything from you, this is usually the right starting point. It's also a good choice for a first massage if you've never had bodywork before and want to see how your body responds to touch and pressure before going deeper.

Deep Tissue Massage — For Stubborn, Specific Tension

Deep tissue massage works more slowly and with firmer pressure, targeting the deeper layers of muscle and the tough, stringy tissue that builds up around old injuries or chronic tightness. If you carry tension in a specific spot, like a knot between your shoulder blades that never seems to fully release, or you're an active person whose muscles simply need more pressure to feel a difference, this is typically the better match. It can feel intense in the moment, sometimes a little uncomfortable, but shouldn't leave you sore for days afterward.

Hot Stone Massage — For Deep Warmth and Deep Relaxation

Hot stone massage layers smooth, heated stones into the massage itself, either placed on the body or used directly by the therapist to work into muscle. The heat helps muscles release more readily, which means your therapist can often work more deeply with less discomfort than a standard deep tissue session. It's a favorite for patients dealing with cold, stiff muscles, especially during our rare cool snaps here in Florida, or anyone who simply loves the feeling of warmth sinking into sore shoulders.

Cranial Sacral Massage — For the Nervous System, Not Just the Muscles

Cranial sacral therapy is the gentlest of the four, using very light touch at the head, neck, and spine to work with the subtle rhythm of fluid around the brain and spinal cord. It's often chosen for headaches, jaw tension, and general nervous system overload rather than sore muscles specifically. If deep pressure isn't for you, or you're dealing with something that feels more like mental fog and tension than physical soreness, this is worth trying.

Still Not Sure? Ask Us

Our massage therapist is happy to talk through what you're feeling before you book, and it's completely normal to switch styles from one visit to the next depending on what your body needs that week. Many patients also pair massage with acupuncture on the same day for a more complete reset.
