Ear Seeds 101: A Simple Way to Extend Your Treatment Between Visits

If you've noticed a small, round seed taped to someone's ear and wondered what on earth it's for, you're not the first person to ask. Ear seeds are one of our most requested add-ons, and at twenty-five dollars, one of the easiest ways to keep supporting your treatment after you've left the office.

What Ear Seeds Actually Are

Ear seeds are tiny seeds, usually from the vaccaria plant, adhered to small pieces of tape and placed on specific points on the outer ear. These points correspond to different areas and systems of the body in auricular therapy, a branch of acupuncture that treats the ear as a kind of map of the whole body. Pressing on a seed stimulates the point beneath it, similar to the effect of an acupuncture needle but far gentler and long-lasting.

How They're Applied

Toward the end of a visit, Dr. Karen will select points based on what you came in for, whether that's stress, sleep, digestion, or pain, and place a few seeds accordingly. She'll show you exactly where they are and how to press them.

Using Them at Home

Once you leave, gently press each seed a few times a day, especially when you notice the symptom flaring up. A little pressure and a small ache is normal; sharp pain is not, and if that happens you can simply remove the seed. Most people keep their seeds in for three to five days before they naturally fall off or start to feel less sticky, whichever comes first.

What They're Good For

Ear seeds are commonly used to support stress and anxiety, sleep trouble, food cravings, and general pain management between full acupuncture sessions. They're not a replacement for your visit, but they are a nice bridge that keeps a small dose of treatment going while you go about your week.

A Low-Effort Way to Stay Consistent

Consistency tends to matter more than any single dramatic treatment when it comes to seeing results with acupuncture. Ear seeds give you something tangible to do between appointments, and patients often say the physical reminder on their ear, seeing it in the mirror, helps them stay mindful of whatever they're working on, whether that's drinking more water or managing stress at work.
